Smokefree Russia is a national program run by the Health and Development Foundation providing information and support to communities, individuals, and businesses who want a greater understanding of new anti-tobacco legislation in Russia, and what they can do to promote smoke-free public places.
One of the organizations supporting our work on this initiative is the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. HDF also partners with regional organizations and societies throughout Russia on local initiatives and programs promoting smoking cessation and educating specialists, business, and the general public on the new federal legislation.
In addition to its work supporting a national coalition of interested parties working towards a smoke-free environment and a healthy population, Smokefree Russia acts as an information hub, providing resources on its website and also conducting webinars for specialists and educators.
HDFalso recently launched a mobile application for the program, which is intended to increase awareness of recent anti-smoking legislation passed in Russia, and community involvement in ensuring smoke-free public spaces.
One main feature of this free mobile application is an interactive map featuring businesses and public places in any city in Russia. Individual volunteers can report violations at businesses they visit, as well as commend locations for following the new legislation. This tool can help users make informed choices about where to spend their time and money, and show business and property owners feedback from visitors, thereby influencing businesses and institutions in the community. You can watch an overview of this feature here.
Other app features provide users with information about new regulations; since Russia's national anti-smoking legislation is so new, many people are unclear about the specifics of the law and fines for violations. App users, both business owners and individuals, can find details on the letter of the law and what fines each violation incurs, provided by specialists.
Since the app is part of a larger effort to reduce smoking in general, and one way to do this is to raise awareness about tobacco industry tactics, another app feature reviews "tobacco industry myths." In this section, users can become better informed about the ways the tobacco industry attempts to use its power and influence to misinform the general public and attract new smokers.
This application is aimed at and tailored for a Russian audience, but could be adapted for use in other countries. If you’re interested in the possibility of launching this app in your language and home country, please contact us at email@example.com.
